strangawesome in february

February 17, 2011

It's been a terrible winter. Maybe not any more terrible than they always are, but by February they all seem terrible, every single year. Yesterday by some glorious miracle when I stepped outside after work it I discovered to my shock that it was 68°!! In February!! Which could mean only one thing– a trip to the park for outside enjoyment.

A trip to the park to rub our hands in the dirt and throw mulch in the last failing rays of the sun. Who needs an entire park full of kids to run around in when you can stand in one place and touch mulch?!  Not my kid.

Mulch. Who knew it was so troubling? I've got my eye on you, mulch. Watch it.

mulch thrower

Yeah, take THAT, mulch! You BE on the ground where you LIVE!

(Did you see? Did you see that what he did there? Mulch on the ground.)

Toddler humor is so misunderstood. Mulch is obviously funny.

You know what's better than mulch? –well not much, but SWINGING, maybe.

That's good stuff, that swinging. Snagglemouthing good stuff.

Our final playground stop for the day was the big kid slide.

climbing the slide

–which he was totally enamored with. He wanted to climb up the stairs himself, over and over. And then–

on the slide

GO! Slide! Win! Run!

We had many repeat performances of giant slide. Mo-mo-more?
Kid is fearless. We might need better insurance.

By next week it will {probably} be back in the 30's. That's just what the weather here in the midwest does, like some kind of fickle asshole offering a taste test of wonderful pie you can't actually have. The blessed warmth won't last and we all know it. But for just one evening things were absolutely perfect– a reprieve from the sad. Munchin' on strawberries, walkin' through the neighborhood; diggin' up some mud, smilin' at some ladies; and not freezing to death.
